Mestiza/Mestizo (2022)

Mestiza/Mestizo (2022) is a photographic diptych produced for a solo exhibition of the same name at Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba, Queensland from 18 July – 6 September 2022.

Mestiza/Mestizo speaks to identities that are sometimes conceived in binaries, such as race, sex, and gender. However, the diptych can stress the fragility of these binaries. Kleine’s appearance – including the piña cloth that drapes across their shoulders – is magnified when both images are viewed side by side. This highlights the unstable attributes that we associate with racial and gendered “types”.
